How to get the best value on your wedding finance

Last weekend’s wedding of the year saw Pippa Middleton marry James Matthews in a celebration that is estimated to have cost anywhere between £250,000 and £700,000, depending on which newspaper you read.

Even a relatively low-key wedding is far from cheap these days. The average cost of a wedding is £27,000, according to Bridebook, rising to £38,000 in London - and 4 per cent of weddings cost more than £100,000.

How are people funding these extravagant celebrations?

According to Moneysupermarket it is increasingly with a loan. The comparison website has recorded a 53 per cent increase in customers applying for wedding loans of more than £30,000 this year.

Over 50,000 people have applied for a wedding loan since January, reports The Times, with 10 per cent requesting more than £20,000. That seems like madness when you consider that 247,372 weddings took place in 2014 and there were 111,169 divorces.

It means there is a reasonable chance you would still be paying for your wedding after you had divorced.

Thankfully, it seems most engaged couples are more sensible. The average wedding loan people apply for is £8,497 and some wedding costs are falling.

The average amount spent on a wedding dress has falling from £1,329 to £832, according to online fashion retailer Lyst. While an engagement ring is typically worth 19% less now than 10 years ago with an average value of £1,080, reports the BBC.

If you do need to borrow money for your wedding then make sure you shop around for the best deal.

M&S Bank offers the lowest-rate personal loan of 2.8 per cent for £10,000 over five years. But, think hard about whether you want to still be paying for your big day in five years time when you may have other demands on your income such as a mortgage or children.

If you don’t need to borrow that much then see if you can put elements of your wedding on a zero per cent credit card. That way you can spread the cost of your wedding for free. Sainsbury’s Bank has the longest zero per cent deal for new purchases, giving you 31 months to clear the debt.

Finally, if you are planning to spend a large sum on your wedding day make sure you are insured. Wedding insurance has become big business in recent years and it is certainly worthwhile if you are spending thousands of pounds.

“Venue cancellation and supplier failure are the main things to consider when buying wedding insurance,” says Ben Wilson of Go Compare, in The Times.

“This ensures that you’re protected should the venue cancel your wedding, or if one of your pre-booked suppliers, a caterer for example, is unable to fulfil your order. To make a claim, you’ll need to have a written agreement or contract with the supplier.”

Just be aware that wedding insurance won’t pay out if your wedding doesn’t go ahead because one of you gets cold feet.

Pippa Middleton

From all accounts of Pippa Middleton's weekend wedding to James Matthews, the night was an affair to remember. According to royal insiders, every detail of their ceremony and reception was choreographed to a T -- and that, not surprisingly, included the seating chart. However, instead of seating couples next to one another, as is customary, Pippa and James had everyone spread out. And this of course means that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry sat separately at the reception. That's a little awkward for Meghan, no?

Sources told the Telegraph that Pippa arranged the seating chart for the reception so that every couple sat apart. Apparently, separating couples at formal events, weddings in particular, is an age-old rule people once followed, but it's not usually implemented at modern events. Pippa and James are one of the exceptions, obviously.

On the one hand, it's a nice notion to separate couples, as it forces everyone to mix and mingle with people they otherwise wouldn't. But it may be better served for more intimate events, like dinner parties. There probably were many people there -- like Meghan -- who really only knew the person they came with.

Of course, it's doubtful that this was sprung on Harry and Meghan when they walked into the reception, so surely they were prepared. But still. Definitely makes things slightly awkward -- especially when Meghan was thee wedding guest everyone has been talking about.

Kim Kardashian West's assistant missed her wedding

Kim Kardashian West's former assistant Stephanie Shepherd didn't get to watch her wedding ceremony because she was "busy filming".

Stephanie - who was recently promoted to Chief Operating Officer of Kardashian West Brands, after previously serving as Kim's assistant - has revealed she missed brunette beauty's marriage to rap star Kanye West in Florence, Italy, in May 2014 because she was trying to capture footage for 'Keeping Up with the Kardashians'.

Recalling her own memories of the romantic occasion, she shared: "I didn't even get to watch the ceremony because I was also filming - I often producer-cam the more personal moments for the show, when they don't want full-on cameras around - so I was filming everyone getting ready.

"And then Caitlyn lost her suit, so I had to locate it; all the girls are getting ready, we're getting Kim together, we're in this castle; Kanye is down rearranging the floral arrangements and all this stuff, all while I'm trying to film."

Kim currently employs a personal assistant, a house assistant and two nannies, but when Stephanie started working for the reality TV star back in 2013, she was her only full-time member of staff.

Stephanie has admitted to being rushed off her feet trying to arrange Kim's jet-set lifestyle - especially after the arrival of Kim's daughter North in June 2013.

She told Refinery29: "I was doing her whole schedule, doing her laundry, booking travel, putting the stroller together and all of these things. But I wasn't nervous. I was just excited, always staying longer than I needed because I was trying to prove myself - and then North came early!

"I was a brand new assistant who had no idea what to do with a baby, but we all moved into Kris' house, and she was the one who made it all feel OK and moved mountains for us."

Selena Gomez simply can’t get enough of her boyfriend, The Weeknd.

According to reports, while many may have assumed that Selena Gomez’s relationship with The Weeknd was just an opportunity to boost her Hollywood reputation, just in time for the release of her new music, sources say that this romance is, in fact, the real deal.

Hollywood Life notes that things are definitely turning serious between the two. They have exited the dating stage and are fully committed to being together for as long as possible. As of right now, Selena Gomez can’t stand being away from her beau for more than a week.

When the “Starboy” singer is on tour, Selena Gomez reportedly finds it hard not to follow her man along, but due to her work commitments to finish recording her forthcoming album in Los Angeles, she has often found herself being stuck in sunny California, having to wait for weeks to see The Weeknd again.

Sources reveal that Selena Gomez more or less knows at this given point that she doesn’t want to spend her life with anybody else but the 27-year-old, stressing that she shares a bond with him that she hasn’t shared with any of the men she’s dated in the past.

As one insider puts it, the more Selena Gomez learns about her beau, the more in love she falls with him. They can talk for hours and Selena will never find herself uninterested in the conversation — she’s totally obsessed with everything about The Weeknd, and that’s enough to assure her that he’s the one.

“It’s getting better and better between Selena and Abe each and every day,” the insider explains. “As they learn more about each other their bond and love grows, Selena says she has to pinch herself sometimes, to check that she’s not dreaming!”

Abe loves absolutely everything about Selena — her beauty, talent, intelligence, her body — but he says his two favorite things about Selena are her smile, which makes him weak at the knees, and her heart. He loves how caring and sweet she is, and how generous and kind she is to her fans, friends, and family.”The Weeknd’s family has embraced Selena Gomez with open arms, with sources claiming that everybody around the couple is really happy for them. They make a great pairing and have proven to their family members that they are not only committed to one another but strongly believe their romance will last for a very long time.

It was just two months back when it was rumored that Selena Gomez had been telling pals she was certain that she’d eventually walk down the aisle and marry The Weeknd. Though she had never said when she would like for it to happen, spending the rest of her life and settling down with the man that’s changed her entire life is definitely a plan for Selena Gomez.

Selena Gomez and the “I Feel It Coming” artist started seeing each other back in December, according to reports, which was just weeks after the former Disney Channel star had checked out of rehab after successfully completing her intensive program, Us Weekly reports.

Selena reportedly credits The Weeknd for helping her stay on the right path and accepting her flaws.

Again, Selena Gomez has never addressed rumors concerning alleged plans that she will marry The Weeknd — fans will have to wait and see whether the singer will talk about the subject matter in due time.

Do you think Selena Gomez and her beau will end up tying the knot?

Zendaya's Stylist on the 'Spider-Man

Before hitting the 2017 MTV Movie & TV Awards, singer-actress Zendaya showed off her smooth dance moves to Bruno Mars' infectious track “24K Magic” on Lip Sync Battle with Spider-Man: Homecoming costar Tom Holland. However, once she arrived on the 26th annual ceremony’s red carpet, her sheer, bohemian chic, embellished gown with loose-fitting bell sleeves stole the show. Guiding her fashion trajectory from fresh-faced Disney starlet to a full-fledged style star -- she recently fronted Dolce & Gabanna’s Spring 2017 campaign -- is self-proclaimed “image architect” Law Roach.

Roach, who recently graced the cover of The Hollywood Reporter alongside Zendaya and fellow client Celine Dion (he also styles Ariana Grande), exclusively talked with Billboard about Zendaya’s stylish red carpet look, receiving sartorial love from Rihanna and what it really takes to launch a clothing line below.

You and Zendaya first met through a client of your store Deliciously Vintage when she was 15. Now that it’s been five years of working together, tell us how Zendaya’s style has evolved over time under your guidance.

Well, I think we both evolved together. She has no fears when it comes to fashion, and it allows us just to try things -- different hair and makeup looks -- and do things that are definitely on trend and not follow the rules. I call her my style soulmate, and our relationship is perfection. I can literally bring a rack of 20 things, and I’ll have my favorite nestled in the middle somewhere, and she’ll come right back to it and say, ‘I love this one.’ Nine times out of 10 that always happens. And now everything we do is just second nature to us. They way we think, the ideas we both have, it’s almost kinda scary in a (great) way.

What about her everyday style compared to her red carpet looks?

Total opposite. She’s such a tomboy and is just so happy in sweats and sneakers. I’m the one pushing for her to wear sunglasses with a nice bag in the airport in case she gets papped. And she’ll say, ‘Nobody cares about that.’ That part of her is the core of who she is, although for the red carpet she loves to be that other girl that’s super glamorous who people love.

Speaking of red carpet, what is your favorite Zendaya red carpet moment of all time?

Well, they’re all kind of like my babies and it’s hard to love one more than the other. My top three would be The Met last year with Michael Kors where she wore a liquid, fun gold dress with the bowl cut and heavy eye [makeup]. I’m obsessed with that look, and she just looked unreal to me. I also loved the [2015] Oscars -- the controversial look about her faux dreads and Vivienne Westwood bridal gown -- both of those were really special to me. My third favorite is when she wore a wore a cropped bustier with a skirt and this little petite, army green colored baseball cap to the BMI Awards. This was before the whole athleisure thing came around, and now you see Chanel doing baseball caps with A-line wedding dresses.

You two also work on her wardrobe line Daya by Zendaya. What has that adventure been like?

It’s tough when you don’t just put your name on something. You look at every single design and sketch, you take all the phone calls and go to all the meetings, it’s a learning process. We both love fashion, but when you’re actually producing something it’s a whole other level, and we have to find the time to juggle it all. For us, working as partners, we compromise. If she doesn't like a shirt that I love, she’ll say, 'Okay, I'll keep that shirt for these pants.’ If you're going to have your hands in it, then you'll have to work hard for that. We’re enjoying it and growing and learning together; it's another facet of what we do.

What excites her the most stylewise?

She's just a character, a chameleon on the carpet, that it’s almost like ‘who are we going to do today.’ Like this year’s Met was an entirely different girl from last year’s Met. That’s what makes her excited because there’s no limit. When you step into something, and you don’t have any concern about what people are going to say the next day, then you’re so free and able to fly as high as you can. And I think that’s what excites us both about when we put on clothes and she steps on that carpet.

Rihanna crowned Zendaya the 'brown goddess' of the Met Gala on Instagram. Did you see that?

Yes! We both died. It was all about the full look: her orange lip, the [Dolce & Gabbana tropical parrot] dress, her natural hair. And that’s kind of what I do when I go in, and for me, I have to control the whole look. I can’t just bring the dress, although sometimes we work with hair stylists and makeup artists, it’s always a vision. Once we picked the gown, I dreamt about that makeup and hair, and looked at all the Comme des Garcons past runway shows and saw what she [designer Rei Kawakubo] did with the hair. The hair was always a little bit avant-garde, not such a traditionally pretty look, you know what I mean? It was a combination of both of those things, and for us, it was always about the full look.

Is that why you call yourself an image architect rather than a stylist?

Yes, absolutely. I'm good at starting from scratch and love to work with girls who haven't fully developed their fashion blueprint or someone who has a certain way that people see them in the world of fashion. Like Celine [Dion], people hadn’t thought of her as a fashion girl, but when I met her, I was like, 'Oh no, this woman knows [style] and has an incredible archive.' So I created another blueprint for her so that she can be looked at a different way and get invited to the Met Gala [where she wore custom Versace] and do all of these other things in the world of fashion that she hasn’t been privy to because nobody really knew that a.) That’s what she wanted to do or b.) She was capable of doing it.

That’s how the image architect thing comes in. I want to work with people so well, where you could say, 'Oh shit, she’s working Law. I knew something had changed, look at her now.' My thing is that we do a lot of thinking and research. For us, it's very cerebral. It's not just ‘Oh, well that’s pretty, let's go with that.’ And of course I'm not saying any other stylist does that, I don't know what their process is, but our process is really thought out.

So what is Zendaya wearing tonight for the MTV Movie & TV Awards?

Tonight she's wearing a stunning piece from Zuhair Murad Couture's Fall-Winter 2016/2017 collection. The ankle-length strapless wedding dress is covered in beautiful 3D appliqués and embellishments and has a plunging neckline. Her bronze open-toe heels with an ankle strap are from Le Silla.

A wedding giveaway with a military twist

When she was 12 years old, Wanda Jones Cooper, now 66, sat on her Granny Jones' front porch in rural Marion County and studied a pine-covered hill at the back of the family farm.

"I want that hill," Wanda told her grandmother, gesturing at the rise in the distance.

"Baby, a rabbit can't even get through over there," her grandmother said, pointing out the thick underbrush.

"I know," Wanda said. "But I want it anyway. It looks kind of like a Christmas present that hasn't been opened yet."

Now, 54 years later, Cooper lives in a brick

house on top of the hill that looks down at the old farmhouse below.

Related: blue bridesmaid dresses

"I've always known where home was," she said wistfully this week, gazing out over the fields where she used to ride a tractor with her grandfather.

In the fullness of time, little Wanda grew up, built the house on the hill and raised a family on what has become known as the Old Jones Farm, which has been in her family since 1898.

The property is located about 30 miles from Chattanooga near Jasper, Tenn. The tall pines on Wanda's hill were significantly thinned in 2011 by a tornado that also ripped the roof off the barn and scattered the horses.

In 2014, Cooper had a vision. She dabbled in making wedding cakes, but found herself loading up her Lincoln SUV to deliver them to far-flung wedding locations such as Valley Head, Ala., and Beersheba Springs, Tenn. Often, the weddings were for young couples who actually live near her home in Marion County.

Cooper thought: Why not convert the family farm into a wedding venue so these people could stay home? More and more couples were skipping traditional church weddings for rustic outdoor locations.

Soon, Cooper remodeled and decorated the barn into a dressing area, kitchen and dance floor. She relocated her horses and built a hillside amphitheater that seats 350. Three years into the project, she is hosting about 30 paid weddings a year.

Last spring, she decided, in a nod to patriotism, to give away a wedding to a deserving military couple. When word spread on Facebook, people in the area stepped forward to donate money, labor and merchandise to the cause.

"The military is my soft spot," Cooper explains. "The whole community volunteered. We had a photographer, a caterer and a hairdresser."

The group chose a Navy couple with kids who wanted to renew their vows after 14 years of marriage.

Brandy Ledesma, a native of Jasper, says she and her husband, Danny, have both seen active duty in the military, and that coming to her hometown to renew their vows was special.

"It meant a lot," she said. "Everyone was so kind and welcoming. And, even though I had just met Wanda, it seemed like I had known her forever."

Later, at the suggestion of Cooper's daughter, the volunteer group decided to widen the circle of winning couples and ended up performing five weddings in two days.

This year, Cooper says she plans to scale back to one wedding. But it will be an excellent affair with a color guard and a uniformed veteran leading the pledge to the flag.

In just one year, Cooper has already banked a bushel of memories.

Thinking back on last summer, she remembers Ledesma jumping up and down and screaming when she found out she'd won.

Another bride trembled and wept with joy when Cooper found her a second-hand wedding dress. Then, there was the wounded male veteran who hugged her tightly and whispered, "You'll never know what this means to us."

Cooper gets a little misty herself telling these stories.

"This is my heart," she says, gesturing around the farm.

If that 12-year-old girl in 1962 could have seen what would eventually happen on her distant hilltop, she would have been pleased.

Consider the "Christmas present" opened.
