4 Crazy-Horrible Wedding Disasters

2016年03月04日

If you’re planning a wedding, chances are your mind went to a billion dark, disastrous places. (What if there’s a hurricane?! What if the venue goes bankrupt?!) Sound like familiar concerns? Remember these two things: (1) That stuff probably won’t happen, and (2) if disaster does strike, it will all work out in the end. See the proof in these debacles.

“Our venue went bankrupt and stole our deposit.”

Our venue closed four months before our wedding amid rumors of bankruptcy. The owner completely fled to evade tax fraud charges! We had already set the date, made a deposit, and sent out invites. The venue’s amazing staff, who were left stranded without jobs, worked for free to compile lists of other venues and vendors willing to offer help and services at reduced prices. We were overwhelmed by all of the support from the hospitality community and ultimately booked a lovely restaurant for our special day. Our wedding went off without a hitch, and now our tale of bad luck is just a funny story we tell about our misadventures in wedding planning.

“Our officiant got lost and never showed up.”

My husband and I were raised Catholic, but we aren't practicing parishioners as adults. So, in order to have the contemporary wedding we wanted, while paying respect to our very religious families, we found a modern Catholic priest willing to perform a Catholic-inspired ceremony in our favorite museum. We thought we found the world's best compromise—except the day of the ceremony, he put the wrong address in his GPS and ended up in south Brooklyn instead of Astoria (not exactly next door, especially with traffic). Fortunately, a few of my friends have officiant licenses. When we realized that the priest wouldn't make it in time, my close pal Whitney stepped up to perform the ceremony. It turned out so amazing and magical in the end that I wouldn’t have changed a thing. I was so happy that a friend was marrying us instead of a stranger. Destiny?

“The flower girl threw up all over her dress.”

Our four-year-old flower girl got so nervous that she puked all over her dress in the bridal trolley on the way to the church. But she still wanted to walk down the aisle! Of course, her dress was covered in puke and we didn’t have time to turn around and get something else for her to wear. (We were already 30 minutes late and everyone waiting at the church started to think I had cold feet.) Long-story short, she ended up walking down the aisle in just her pink glitter Toms shoes, undies and sunglasses. It was an adorable disaster.

“Our florist forgot the flowers.”

First, our florist was 30 minutes late to the church and my groomsmen and I had to assemble everything ourselves. Then, I realized they didn’t even bring the flowers my wife specifically requested for the pews! I was freaking the $%*& out that she’d be so upset when she walked down the aisle, seeing the wrong flowers on every bench. But she wasn’t! In fact, she was so focused on me that she didn’t even notice.
